Hambsch, Wood Punch Ticket to U14 State Championships
Killington, VT. The Ski Runners U14s had their last regular season race this past Sunday, a giant slalom on Killington’s “HIghline” race trail. Results of this race would help set the field for the Vermont Alpine Racing Association’s (VARA) U14 State Championships to be held March 8-10 at Stratton Mountain, Vermont.
After the first of two runs, Sam Hambsch sat in 11th place, and Bode Wood in 21st. In difficult snowy and rainy conditions, both put their foot on the gas when it counted most and skied fast second runs. Hambsch had the fourth-fastest second run to finish in seventh place overall with a two-run combined time of 54.36 seconds, while Wood had the seventh-fastest second run time and finished in 14th place with a total time of 55.95 seconds. Cole Firstbrook from Okemo Mountain School won the race with a time of 52.19 seconds.
Ski Runners teammates Malcolm Crawford and Mark Van der Shoot also skied well and enjoyed good finishes, placing 33rd and 37th respectively.
In the girls’ race, Lila Mato’s strong skiing in difficult conditions led the way for the Ski Runners team, finishing in 28th place with a total time of 1:05.40. Her teammate Libby Galton was not far behind in 32nd, while Maggie McKee finished in 40th place. Merina Visnic from Okemo Mountain School won the race with a total time of 52.31 seconds.
Immediately following the race, officials quickly crunched the results of all five council races to determine who qualified to represent the Mid-Vermont Council (MVC) at State Championships. Sam Hambsch and Bode Wood qualified directly and will represent Ski Runners at States!
Teammates Lila Mato, Libby Galton, Mark Van der Shoot, Ben Johnsen, and Malcolm Crawford qualified for the VARA U14 Shootout, a last-chance qualifier for State Championships to be held March 3 at Pico Mountain. Congratulations and good luck to all. The Ski Runners community is proud of all of you!
