10th Annual Masters of the Mountain

175 Kids Race, Ski Moguls and the Terrain Park in Heavy Snow

South Pomfret, VT. When Ski Runners U10 Coach Dave Steele got together with Whaleback’s Evan Dybvig to create the Masters of the Mountain Series, their intention was to create a fun introduction to ski competition for area kids. Ten years later, the event draws more than 175 skiers from six different ski clubs: Quechee, Pico, Middlebury, Ford Sayre, Whaleback, and of course, Ski Runners.

We asked ourselves ‘how do we get kids to be better all around skiers?’ while also providing an opportunity to try competitive skiing without having to dive in head first as a racer or mogul competitor without having much experience to base that decision on.

- Dave Steele

The event features three different types of runs: a timed giant slalom race, a judged mogul run with two jumps, and a judged terrain park run with three larger jumps. Each participant’s total score was a combination of their scores in each individual event. The competitors ranged in age from 5 to 14.

This year’s weather added another challenge the kids had to deal with: heavy snow. The visibility during the race portion of the morning was very difficult, but all the kids did a great job!

As usual, we would like to thank Suicide 6 for the great snow and perfect courses.
